Note 7. Other Investments

As of December 31, 2013, we maintain minority investments in one privately-held company accounted for under the cost method as we do not have the ability to exercise significant influence over its operations. Our investments in this privately-held company is reviewed for other than temporary declines in value on a quarterly basis. We monitor our investments for impairment and record reductions in carrying value when events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying value may not be recoverable. Reasons for other than temporary declines in value include whether the related company would have insufficient cash flow to operate for the next twelve months, significant changes in the operating performance and changes in market conditions. We had two companies which are accounted for under the cost method in 2012 and one company in 2013. In 2013, one of the two investments was re-categorized as available for sale short-term investments and written-up to market value after its initial public offering. As of December 31, 2013 and 2012, our cost method investments had a carrying value of $200,000 and 392,000, respectively, and are included in "other assets" in the consolidated balance sheets.
